Grand Forks Air Force Base is a military facility located in North Dakota, United States. It is home to the 319th Reconnaissance Wing, which is responsible for operating the RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft system. The base is also home to the 69th Reconnaissance Group and the 319th Operations Group, which provide support for the RQ-4 Global Hawk missions.

The history of Grand Forks Air Force Base dates back to 1955 when it was established as an Air Defense Command base. Over the years, the base has undergone several changes in its mission, including being a Strategic Air Command base and then a base for the Air Mobility Command. In 2011, it was redesignated as an Air Combat Command base, with a focus on unmanned aircraft systems.

The primary mission of Grand Forks Air Force Base is to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for combatant commanders. The RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft that is capable of conducting a wide range of ISR missions. It can fly at altitudes of up to 60,000 feet for more than 30 hours, providing real-time, high-resolution imagery and data to support military operations around the world.

In addition to its ISR mission, Grand Forks Air Force Base also supports a variety of other functions, including maintaining and operating a fleet of KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft for aerial refueling operations. The base also provides support for personnel assigned to the base and their families, including housing, medical care, and recreational facilities.

Grand Forks Air Force Base is an important strategic asset for the United States military, providing critical ISR capabilities and support for a wide range of military operations. The base plays a key role in maintaining national security and supporting the global mission of the Air Force. With its state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated personnel, Grand Forks Air Force Base continues to be a vital component of the nation’s defense capabilities.
